At the center of this turbulent comedy, featuring original music by Archie Shepp, is a family of eccentric characters: At 80, the father Salomon Bellinsky (Jean-Pierre Marielle), a Holocaust survivor, bubbles with joie de vivre, taking tap lessons and dancing in front of the TV with Fred Astaire in Top Hat. He finds a suitably eccentric partner in Violette (Sabine Azéma), while his wife Geneviève (Bulle Ogier), who has settled into a gentle madness, is carried and protected by a domestic help (Bakary Sangaré). The 40-year-old daughter Sarah (Valeria Bruni Tedeschi) who acts as the narrator, tries to maintain a degree of sanity in the family. Her unexpected pregnancy results in a nightmare that is set to images, a curious birth and another dance scene. (bik)
